Class of 2020

At the beginning of this school year I was excited to be a senior. I loved the classes I took, I loved my teachers, and I had lots of fun with my friends in school and outside of school (football games were my favorite thing to do on Friday nights). Everything was going smoothly. I never would have imagined what would happen next.
It was my last day at school before I went on my trip to Arizona for a competitive cheer competition. Little did I know that it would be my last day at school ever. I was at the airport when a girl from my team came up to me and told me that our competition was canceled because of the corona virus. I was sad that the competition was canceled, but we still got to go to Arizona with friends from my team, so it was okay.
I was in Arizona when we heard that school has been canceled for 2 weeks. I was excited because well, 2 weeks I got to stay home. Granted we had online school but still. Our trip came to an end. Overall it was a great break from reality. Soon enough our little school break was coming to an end. They then announced that we would not physically be attending school for the rest of the year. I was devastated. I never got to say goodbye to anyone and appreciate my last day as a student in that school. My cheer season was also canceled for the rest of the year.
The one month stay at home order turned into 2 months. I'm going to be honest I was getting pretty annoyed with staying inside just like all of you I am sure. Around May the school district told us how we would be graduating. In our district they would be taking a video. Students would come at a the time they were told and would walk across a stage that was set up, and would be video taped holding our diploma cover and having our picture taken. This video would be released on June 10th and we could watch the video with our family. I'm going to be honest, the video was not that great filming wise. At one point a kid who was on the stage disappeared because they cut the clip weird.
It is what it is though. The one thing that I loved about this whole situation was the graduation parade that our community put together. We got to decorate our cars and drive on a set route through the city. I wasn't expecting much people to watch but boy was I wrong! There were tons of people and it was such a surreal experience. I much rather do that then have a real ceremony in front of 2000+ people. That was the one thing I was anxious about during my senior year.
In the end, the class of 2020 was duked. But it is what it is. At least we weren't just mailed our diploma, and if that happened to you I am so sorry that is terrible. To all you seniors this year, keep your head held high. We graduated and that is a huge accomplishment! We are on to bigger and better things. Chase your dreams and don't give up! Our graduation was the most unusual that's for sure. But it will also be the most remembered. Also this year is halfway over, and hopefully 2021 will be better than this year.
